The market
The continent of Africa represents almost a billion people across 54 diverse countries. Although behind other developing markets in terms of international investment, there has been stable and significant growth in the past twenty years, especially since 2000. This is driven largely by improvements in infrastructure as well as rapid urbanization. The fastest growing African economies are growing much faster than the average global rates.
South Africa is the largest economy in Africa by far, contributing more that 25% of the continent’s GDP. With its well-developed retail sector, good infrastructure and world-class banking system it is often seen as the gateway to the rest of Africa. Label converters in South Africa are also known for being early adapters of the latest technology.
The rapid growth of supermarkets (by both local and international chains) in Africa is providing plenty of opportunities for the label industry. This is aided by legislation aimed at improving standards, for example on environmental packaging.
